Radish sambar- Mullangi sambar

Hello !!! I am back to blog with my favourite recipe - radish sambar .I am very much fond of this dish . whenever i plan to prepare sambar, i choose radish as a veggie for sambar .It is an typical south -indian dish. I learned this recipe from my mom who is expert in cooking sambar varieties.sambar is usually served with steamed rice as one of the main courses  both on formal and on everyday south -indian c


Ingredients needed :-

Toor dal - 3/4 cup
Radish -1 (big one )
onion -1
Garlic cloves -3
Tomato -1/2
Thin tamarind extract -1/3 cup
Turmeric powder -a pinch
Sambar powder - 1 tbsp
Chilli powder -1/2 tbsp
Salt

For seasoning :-

Oil
Fenugreek
Mustard seeds
Cumin seeds
Curry leaves

For garnishing :-

Coriander leaves
Ghee(optional )

Method :-
  1. Soak Toor dal  in water for 20 minutes. In a pressure cooker add toor dal , turmeric powder, garlic cloves, tomato and enough water for 3-4 whistles.
  2. once the pressure cooker subsides ,mash the toor dal using laddle and keep it aside .Wash radish and peel the skin off .Cut into rounded shape, it yields upto (10-12 pieces ).
  3. Heat oil in the pan ,add fenugreek, cumin seeds , mustard seeds once it sputters add curry leaves , and chopped onions. saute until the mixture turns golden brown ,add the radish mix it well .Add enough water for the radish to become soft .
  4. Add sambar powder( either home-made or ready-made),chilli powder,needed salt . Allow it to cook till the radish turns soft .Add the mashed dal , tamarind extract and mix it well . Adjust the consistency of the dal .
  5. Garnish with coriander leaves and ghee while serving .
Serving Size :- 3-4

Serve it with steamed rice ,idly or dosa .
